As fight week dawns in Rio de Janeiro, Michael “The Texas Kid” Aswell is thousands of miles from home—but right where he belongs.
Houston Roots and the Godfather’s Influence
Born and raised in Houston, Aswell’s path to the UFC started in the late Coach Saul Soliz’s legendary Metro Fight Club. Soliz—often called “The Godfather of Texas MMA”—saw something special in a 14-year-old kid with big dreams and bigger work ethic.
“He told me, if I could make 145 pounds, he’d let me fight for him,” Aswell recalled. “I dropped 50 pounds and debuted at 17.”
That challenge forged both a fighter and a mindset built on discipline and loyalty—qualities that still define Aswell today.
Finding Home at 4 Ounce Fight Club
After Soliz’s passing, Aswell spent time sharpening his craft at Glory MMA in Kansas City before returning home to Houston. Now at 4 Ounce Fight Club, he trains beside veterans like Daniel Pineda and rising stars Josh Van and Adrian Yañez, part of a surging Texas wave in the UFC.
“Houston’s fight scene is huge,” Aswell said. “We’ve got about ten UFC guys right now and more coming.”
Champion Mindset
Before earning his UFC call, Aswell captured the Fury FC Featherweight Title with a first-round knockout. That finish punched his ticket to Dana White’s Contender Series, where his all-action style earned him both a post-fight bonus and, eventually, a short-notice UFC debut.
“They called me on a Tuesday and asked if I wanted to fight Saturday,” he laughed. “I said absolutely.”
He lost a decision that night but gained the respect of the matchmakers—and a second chance on the sport’s biggest stage.
A Featherweight Rebirth
Saturday’s bout against Lucas Almeida marks Aswell’s first full camp at his natural 145-pound division. He believes this is where he truly belongs.
“I can fight 45, I can fight 55, but at featherweight you’re gonna see why that’s my home,” he said. “I bring a style that hasn’t really been seen too much—I think I’m the spark the division’s missing.”

Into Enemy Territory
Fighting a Brazilian in Brazil is no easy assignment, yet Aswell welcomes it.
“They asked if I wanted to fight there—I said absolutely. They sold out in 15 minutes. Whatever the crowd yells, I’ll just pretend they’re cheering for me.”
Breaking Cards and Breaking Barriers
Outside the cage, Aswell connects with fans through sports-card breaking with Agency Breaks and proudly holds the distinction of being the first UFC fighter to wear the Debut Patch—a collectible milestone soon to appear on trading cards.
“I just keep setting records I didn’t even know were things,” he smiled. “It’s a fun way to engage fans and show fighters can build brands beyond fighting.”
The Road Ahead
Still only 24, Michael Aswell represents the new generation of UFC athletes—hungry, market-savvy, and built from the grassroots of America’s regional fight scene.
Whether he’s trading punches in Brazil or trading cards online, The Texas Kid carries Houston’s fighting spirit everywhere he goes.
