AFC 70 Recap: A Night of Finishes, a Viral Debut, and a Heartbreaking Main Event

Ascendancy Fighting Championships returned to the Mid-American Energy RecPlex in West Des Moines, Iowa on Friday, May 30th for AFC 70 β€” a nine-bout card that delivered finishes up and down the lineup, a debut that had the entire building buzzing, and a pro main event that ended before it had a chance to begin. Watch the full replay now at MMA Futures.

AFC 70 Main Event: Linzy Hudson vs. Spencer Wray | Pro MMA | Featherweight

The night’s biggest bout lasted approximately eight seconds β€” and not because of a knockout.

Spencer Wray, the 3-0 Des Moines fan favorite who draws a crowd everywhere he fights, walked to the cage with his kids wrestling group behind him to a packed RecPlex ovation. Across from him, Linzy Hudson β€” a Wisconsin-based grappler out of Pura Vida BJJ who had just left his teaching career to pursue full-time competition β€” was making his AFC debut and looking to make a statement.

What followed was one of the night’s most difficult moments. Wray suffered a dislocated kneecap in the opening seconds of the fight before any significant exchanges could occur. Referee Ivan called a halt. Linzy Hudson wins by TKO via injury stoppage at 0:08 of Round 1.

Wray immediately took the microphone and addressed the crowd with grace: “Injuries happened, and I’m sorry. Hats off to Linzy Hudson β€” I know that he prepared a lot for this. I hope that we get to do this again.” Hudson, who trained hard for this opportunity and didn’t get to show what he came to show, was equally classy in the aftermath. The rematch conversation has already started.

AFC 70 Fight of the Night: Gavin Urias vs. Eli Morris | Amateur MMA

Before the main event, Gavin Urias and Eli Morris put on the best fight of the night and earned the Fight of the Night bonus to prove it.

Urias, 22, trains at Elite Edge in Ankeny under Josh Henry and came in with the most complete skill set on display all evening β€” combination punching from unorthodox angles, knees to the body in the clinch, and fluid stance transitions that made it difficult for Morris to find his timing. By the third round, his confidence was visibly growing with every exchange.

Morris, 22, out of Henry’s Martial Arts in Creston, has a taekwondo-influenced striking game and a chin that showed up when it needed to. He took Urias’s best shots and kept competing across all three rounds. Urias took the unanimous decision 30-27 on all three scorecards.

Two 22-year-olds. Three rounds. Zero quit from either man.

Logan Curtis Makes the Most Memorable Debut of the Night

If AFC 70 had a viral moment, it belonged to Logan Curtis β€” and it started before a single punch was thrown.

Curtis, a wrestler out of Ankeny who trains at Elite Edge, arrived with props, a crew, an urn, and energy that had the crowd reacting from the moment he walked in. He refused the glove touch, got directly in Patrick Fletchall’s face, and brought the kind of presence that’s nearly impossible to manufacture. Then he backed it up β€” using his wrestling to work Fletchall to the ground and finishing with hammer fists from mount in Round 2.

In the post-fight interview, he called out Cyrus Mathis by name for the 155-pound belt at Case Aggression in October. Mathis responded on social media within minutes: “If you want smacked up, I’ll smack up you or any of your teammates. Hit me up. Just let me know the date.” Iowa MMA has a new rivalry.

Every event streams live and on demand β€” full cards, replays, and the archive.

AFC 70 Full Card Recap

Brian Hernandez def. Giovanni Hernandez β€” UD (30-27 / 30-27 / 30-26) β€” Three rounds of non-stop pressure and big shots from Brian Hernandez were enough to take the unanimous decision over Giovanni Hernandez. Neither man backed down in a brawl that had the RecPlex crowd on its feet throughout.

Vance Hickman def. Carter Strovers β€” SUB R1 (Triangle choke) β€” Hickman showed clean technical ground work and finished Strovers with a first-round triangle choke, earning the Jocko Fuel bout bonus.

Chase Rider def. Ezekiel Sharon β€” TKO R1 β€” A single overhand right from Rider ended the kickboxing bout in the first round. Referee Eric Carr saw enough immediately. Rider trains out of Carlisle, Iowa, and showed legitimate knockout power in his hands.

Clayton Welch def. Greg Mitchell β€” TKO R2 β€” Welch, out of Porcelli’s Training Center in Pleasant Hill, came in behind a patient leg kick game and wore Mitchell down over two rounds before the stoppage.

Pedro Gonzalo def. Davaree Thompson β€” UD (29-28) β€” A competitive three-round kickboxing bout that came down to the judges. Gonzalo’s third-round pressure from Knoxville Fight Club was the deciding factor across all three scorecards.

Daniel Gorshki def. Ganesh Magar β€” TKO R3 (1:49) β€” The opening bout went the full distance before three standing eight counts in the third round sealed it for Gorshki. Magar showed toughness throughout; Gorshki’s forward pressure wore on him over three rounds.
